One of my biggest interests growing up was Greek mythology and how the beliefs of the citizens of Greece were so passionate and true that they resembled that of modern-day religion. The culture of Greece is rarely matched by any other nations across the globe. From the original Olympics held in Athens to the monumental Temples scattered throughout the country, Greece was one of my dream destinations, so I was extremely excited when I had the opportunity to visit.
The Parthenon is one of the greatest architectural marvels known to man, and let me tell you, pictures do not do this building justice. It is arguably the most fascinating structure I’ve been able to witness in person. With eight columns on each of its short sides and 17 columns on its long sides, you can imagine how large this monument truly is. From the outside, it is mesmerizing, but your jaw will really drop once you enter the Parthenon. The combination of new and old elements within the building provides an innovative way to admire the history that truly makes the structure one of a kind. Gold, ivory, and marble statues surround you, as you observe the many ancient carvings that litter the walls. The Parthenon does a wonderful job of preserving and depicting the historical culture that makes Greece a top-notch tourist destination.
Temple of Apollo at Delphi
Arguably the most famous temple in all of Greece, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi was where all offerings made to the God were kept. Apollo is believed to be the most important mythological being in ancient Greece, which made this temple a must-see for me. Although the Temple is not intact, the remains of its beautifully built columns looking over the gorgeous Greek mountainside provided me with one of the most amazing spectacles I’ve ever seen. With the sun shining down on me, it was like Apollo was there to greet me himself.
Ancient Stadium of Olympia
Being a sports fan, there was no way I could visit Greece without checking out the original stadium in which the Olympics were held. The Ancient Stadium of Olympia provided me with a glimpse of the origin of sport. As I stood inside and took a look around, I envisioned the world’s greatest athletes competing at the highest level before athletic competition was weighed down by endorsement deals and performance-enhancing drugs. The spirit of competition drives me every single day, and to be able to witness where it all began gave me goosebumps.
